ABOUT US

Geechee Experience is a millennial-led cultural movement that’s focused on educating, entertaining, and empowering Geechee people from all generations. Geechee and Gullah is an English based creole language and culture that was developed by enslaved Africans living in coastal regions of South Carolina, North Carolina, Georgia and Florida.

Geechee is a variation of the Gullah language. Gullah is mainly spoken on the islands by elders and is on the verge of extinction because it is no longer being passed on to the next generation.

Mission: Some Geechee people refuse to speak their language and forbid their children from speaking Geechee to avoid language discrimination. These practices can cause our language to fade away. Our mission is to prevent our language from dying by changing attitudes about Geechee languages and culture through entertainment and education.

Vision: To increase cultural awareness among Geechee people by exposing them to positive aspects of their history and culture to draw inspiration from. To provide Geechee youth with the skills to be successful as they navigate in two worlds that requires them to be fluent in Standard American English and fluent in their native language, Geechee.
